A memorial site, not a complete tunnel crossing
The D-B complex, known as Tunel spasa, is managed by Sarajevo Memorial Centre. Visitors enter on the Butmir side. The displays cover the siege, tunnel construction and everyday objects; only parts of the tunnel are accessible to visitors. [1]
Leave room for understanding
We suggest starting with the context and exhibition before approaching the underground section under staff guidance. Read object labels and distinguish original elements from restored sections. The point is not simply to walk a few metres underground: it is also to understand daily life and the memories the site preserves.
Make it a separate journey
Do not schedule this museum between two old-bazaar walking stops. Plan transport to Butmir and the return, and confirm the correct visitor entrance with the operator. If flying the same day, allow a generous buffer: being in the wider airport area does not establish a direct route to the terminal.
Children, mobility and enclosed spaces
Explain the nature of the visit to children beforehand and choose an appropriate pace. If you have mobility needs or find confined spaces difficult, ask which areas can be visited without entering the underground section. Do not assume the whole route is accessible, and keep the option to visit only suitable parts.
Confirm practical arrangements
We suggest one to two hours on site, in addition to travel. Check seasonal opening, last admission, payment methods and group arrangements directly with the Memorial Centre. This page does not sell admission. Continue with our remembrance section or Bosnia memory-route guide for wider context.
Frequently asked questions
Can I walk through the entire tunnel beneath the airport?
No. The visitor site should not be described as a complete tunnel crossing. Ask which sections are open for your visit.
How should I approach the visit?
As a place of remembrance. Respect staff guidance, testimony and other visitors. Photography and the pace of a family visit should reflect that setting.
