Baščaršija and Sebilj: a Sarajevo old bazaar walking guide

Start around Sebilj and make room for the lanes beyond the square. This guide suggests a relaxed first walk through the bazaar rather than a checklist of photo stops.

Times are editorial planning suggestions, not the duration of a service sold here.

Understand the landmark

Sebilj is the fountain on Baščaršija square. Its structure includes wood, stone and copper. The surrounding bazaar offers a small-scale way to experience Sarajevo: look at shopfronts, passages and shared public spaces as well as the landmark itself. [1]

Make the visit more than a photograph

Our suggestion is to use the fountain as an orientation point, explore the nearby streets and choose a coffee stop. When buying an object, ask where and how it was made rather than assuming every souvenir is local craft. Keep shop entrances clear and ask before photographing people or work inside an atelier.

Connect your old-town stops

Continue towards Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque, then Latin Bridge for a riverside stop. City Hall is another possible addition. This is an editorial suggestion, not a waymarked route or an included guided tour. Arrange access to interiors separately and leave time for the places that interest you.

Plan your pace and accommodation

We suggest one to two hours for a first look, more with food or an interior visit. Do not organise a rental car for every stop within the bazaar: consider car hire for the wider journey instead. When choosing accommodation, check the precise address, luggage access and possible noise rather than relying on an “old town” label.

Before you go

Wear shoes suitable for an urban walk. If travelling with a pushchair or reduced mobility, ask about the routes and entrances you intend to use. Shops, museums and places of worship have separate opening arrangements; visiting the area does not mean every interior is accessible.
