Počitelj guide: historic lanes and a visit from Mostar

The description submitted to UNESCO identifies medieval and Ottoman fortifications, a mosque, a clock tower and stone houses. Počitelj is on the Tentative List: that is different from being inscribed on the World Heritage List. ^[1]

Our suggested visit

Our suggestion is to start in the lower part of the settlement, then climb through the lanes at a comfortable pace. Choose a few viewpoints rather than rushing through every stop. Religious buildings and homes are not automatically open attractions; respect access signs and the people living here.

Access and pace

The slope matters when planning the visit. With a pushchair, young children or walking difficulties, ask which lower route is suitable instead of assuming every viewpoint is accessible. In hot weather, consider a cooler part of the day and carry water. Check individual monument opening locally.

Mostar can be a separate accommodation base for an Herzegovina stay. Our hotel links explicitly concern Mostar, not rooms in Počitelj. Before booking an excursion, check that Počitelj is actually included and confirm the starting point: some regional trips depart from another country.
